LOPA is a simplified and semi quantitative method of risk assessment used by process industry for SIL assignment. It sits between a qualitative process hazard analysis (PHA) and a quantitative risk analysis (QRA). It uses simplifying rules to evaluate scenario impacts, initiating cause frequency and independent layers of protection, therefore providing an order of magnitude risk estimate.
